RHYTHMS FACE-OFF: Flamenco vs. Tap Battle
Wednesday, April 16, 2025 / 8:00 p.m.
Songbyrd Music House
Mars Arts D.C., District Coalition, the Spanish Embassy, and Songbyrd Music House proudly present “RHYTHMS FACE-OFF,” an innovative show that aligns two of the world’s most powerful expressions of percussive dance with each other: the fiery Spanish flamenco and the vibrant American tap dance.
The Concept
What happens when two legendary rhythmic traditions meet face to face? During this electrifying night, masters of flamenco and tap dance will challenge each other in a series of artistic duels where rhythm, improvisation, and passion will determine who dominates the stage. It’s not just a competition but a celebration of two rich and expressive cultures that share the universal language of rhythm.
The Artists
Christian Casariego Moreno – Prodigious flamenco dancer trained in all five disciplines of Spanish dance at the Carmen Amaya Professional Dance Conservatory. He has performed with prestigious companies such as Ballet Flamenco de Madrid, taking his art to international stages from Saudi Arabia to China.
Francisco “Yiyi” Orozco – World-renowned flamenco percussionist and singer, considered a prodigy since his childhood in Barcelona. His percussive technique, described as having “machine-gun speed,” has captivated audiences on Broadway, Europe, and Asia, sharing the stage with the biggest names in contemporary flamenco.
Joseph Webb is an interdisciplinary artist who fuses African diasporic vernacular dance, music, and AAV poetics. This Young Arts Fellow supported by The Rockefeller Brothers Fund has shined on Broadway in the Tony Award-winning production “Bring in ‘da Noise Bring in ‘da Funk,” and is considered by The New York Times as “a natural star.”
Romeir Mendez is an exceptional bassist from Baltimore who has conquered prestigious stages such as Carnegie Hall. Trained with the legendary Steve Novosel, Romeir brings a unique rhythmic depth that has backed artists of the caliber of Donald Harrison, Regina Carter, and the Grammy-nominated group, Sweet Honey In The Rock.
DjG – Nationally recognized for his high-energy mixes and ability to connect with the audience. DjG brings a multicultural sensibility of Trinidadian descent that perfectly complements this artistic fusion between traditions.
